It had previously been reported that Ennio Morricone was to “work on” Quentin Tarantino’s forthcoming western The Hateful Eight. Excitement was somewhat tempered since it was not entirely clear that “work on” meant “compose a full score for” (the composer had previously “worked on” Django Unchained, writing a song for it) but Tarantino confirmed today that the great Italian maestro is indeed writing a full score for the movio, and indeed is to record it in Prague in the next couple of weeks.
Morricone, now 86, has been unsurprisingly far less prolific in recent years and concerns over his health were raised when he cancelled a number of concerts. Fortunately he now appears to be fit and well (and once again travelling around Europe conducting his music in front of live audiences). Tarantino has used Morricone’s music in many of his previous films, placing cues from a variety of the maestro’s vintage works into Kill Bill, Inglorious Basterds and others.
Something to look forward to…
I’m sure that ANDREA, ENNIO’S son, will be around to assist with the complexity of this scoring assignment. It was the Western, ‘The Good, the Bad and the Ugly’ that brought the name MORRICONE to the attention of Cinema’s directors and film music devotees. If ‘The Hateful Eight’ is to be his Western scoring swansong, may it surpass all those proud Heroic anthems, exquisite Love themes and quircky Orchestrations that he created for the genré. But the wish is always there, that MORRICONE’S extraordinary Compositional Gifts will be around for many more years– enhancing a movie’s storyline and satisfying the ‘demands’ of his global fan base.
