THE DEVIL'S REJECTS Bizarre,
experimental collection of noises
A review by JAMES SOUTHALL
There's a certain demographic who will buy the soundtrack album for The
Devil's Rejects, with music by Tyler Bates. I am not part of that
demographic. (Indeed, I suspect most of those who are part of the
demographic are in prison - though they no doubt have the internet in prison
these days, so I will continue with this review for their benefit.) I
arrived at this conclusion based on the following:
- "When a movie is this bad, it's hard to describe its awfulness in
words... a vile and reprehensible motion picture... [after seeing the film]
I had to go home and take a shower to wash away the filth... every character
is repugnant... the acting makes a high school play look impressive... if
the simple act of sitting in a movie theater watching people get hacked up
for 90 minutes doesn't bother you, the dullness and repetition is likely to..."
- James Berardinelli, ReelViews
- The liner notes are about two hundred words long, six of which are
"fuck" or a variant thereon
- The director notes that he asked for a "totally fucked-up score"
- The composer says "I hope those of you reading this can imagine the
many nights I couldn't sleep because this shit was pounding in my head"
- The music is a collection of weird noises, some provided by kitchen
utensils and other implements, some provided by synthesisers which sound
like the ones I had at school in 1983 (and it was not a well-off
school)
- There's no melody
If, by any chance, anyone buys this CD who isn't in prison, it surely won't
be long before they find themselves there, as a result of carrying out some sort
of dire act having heard the content of the disc (I hesitate to call it
music). Lord only knows what I might do, but I suspect it will involve a
food processor (which is no doubt one of the featured instruments in the score)
and the little kitten the boy over the road has just got. I like to think
I'm quite progressive and willing to try new things, and I might be tempted to
eat pig's oesophagus, spend 36 hours buried alive in raw sewage or chop off all
my fingers just to see how I'd cope, but this is taking things a bit far.
