DISCLOSURE One
for the film, not the album
This peculiar score for Barry Levinson's Disclosure goes between an attractive melody in "Serene Family" through some cheesy electronic effects ("Computers and Work"), a weird electric guitar theme with a rhythm track backing ("Preparation and Victory") and downright annoying suspense music (the three
passacaglias that appear at the end).
Of course, Ennio Morricone has written countless times in every genre of film imaginable; he has, after all, scored 400 films! But because of this, one can't help but wonder whether some times he doesn't put all his efforts into each one of his projects; perhaps Disclosure just wasn't suitably inspiring as a film.
As I said, there are three passacaglias at the end of the disc. Essentially,
this means minimalism, which can be frustrating or attractive, but in Morricone's hands it is the same four notes repeated over and over and over and over (and this happens in a couple of other cues as well); it certainly does build up suspense, but also gives you the urge to send nuclear missiles in the direction of a certain Italian composer. For thirty seconds, fine; but ten minutes?
Disclosure is reasonable enough, but nothing special; there are many other Morricone scores in which you should first invest.
