Here’s the shortlist for the Golden Globe award for Best Original Score:
- Avatar – James Horner
- The Informant! – Marvin Hamlisch
- A Single Man – Abel Korzeniowski
- Up – Michael Giacchino
- Where the Wild Things Are – Karen O, Carter Burwell
I haven’t heard the Korzeniowski or Karen O / Burwell scores; of the others, I think either Avatar or The Informant! would be a worthy winner. Any thoughts?
Well, I think Horner, Hamlisch & Giacchino are very justified nominees. They all did a great job in those scores. Burwell’s score is quite charming, but hardly one of the year’s top five. Instead, they should have put inside at least one of the seven scores Alexandre Desplat wrote this year, as well as Dario Marianelli’s wonderful Agora.
Korzeniowski’s score is really gorgeous, and would be a worthy winner too. It’s like Glass combined with Nyman, but with much more warmth and romance. Really worth seeking out.
Well I would go for Giacchino`s UP score! It was/ is one of the best scores in 2009 , Avatar would be my second choice!
I concur that The Informant and Avatar would make fine winners, though I wouldn’t be upset if Up won. Though I liked the Where the Wild Things Are score, I actually prefer Burwell’s music for A Serious Man. As for A Single Man, I haven’t heard it yet, but I’ve been hearing a lot of praise from various folks outside the film music circle (which may or may not mean anything significant).
Well I would go for Hamlisch’s The Informant! Though Avatar & Up! are fine, Hamlisch’s score is second coming of ‘The Way We Were’.
