Latest reviews of new albums:

morriconeOne of the great things having this new capsule review section will give me is the chance to once again start writing about older albums.  I used to do it all the time – mixed in with all the new albums, I’d catch up with ones from the past.  As I have had less and less time to write those longer reviews, the older albums have inevitably been squeezed out.  Fortunately, I can now use this section of the website to start reviewing them again, and plugging some of the gaps.

I receive barely any feedback from this website, but one common theme that’s emerged from the few emails which have trickled through in the last decade is that people like reading reviews of Ennio Morricone scores.  Buying a Morricone score is a gamble – if it’s not reviewed here then the chances are it’s not reviewed anywhere, so it can be hard to know whether it’s a melodic masterpiece of just interminable suspense music.  (I have of course had to take a lot of those gambles myself – some of them haven’t worked out so well, but fortunately I’ve discovered an awful lot of great stuff.)

So – over the next few days – look for a few new reviews of Morricone scores, starting today with Risoluzione 819, released earlier this year.  And don’t forget too that his latest score, Baaria, is now on CD.  I’m waiting for my own copy to arrive.

A point to note – I’ll actually be in France next week and so all the reviews which appear have been written in advance and then uploaded by a robot.  This may mean that I’m unable to approve new comments from people who haven’t left them before (it’s just an anti-spam measure that I have to do it) – but please don’t let that stop you.  I’m always keen to hear from you – whether it’s to post your own views on a score, or to disagree violently with mine, or maybe even occasionally to agree!

Great news. Your Morricone reviews were always my favourite part of your arsenal. The more the better… looking forward to Baaria.

Thanks for doing this James, I enjoy your reviews of EMs scores. I too cannot wait for ‘Baaria’ to arrive.

I am suprised that you do not receive a great deal of feedback from readers about your reviews, and I confess that I am as guilty as the others as using your pearls of wisdom and not acknoweledging the efforts you have made in buying, listening and reviewing. I am a massive Morricone fan, and my collection is allthe better from being guided by your superb reviews. Many thanks for your services!!!
